At the Cole-face of innovation

With over 35 years working with electrochlorination systems, Maxwell Cole heads up the Product Design team at Gaffey, take a look at what he has to say about the latest development, Adaptive Responsive Technology.

Gaffey Technical Services is built on a foundation of industry leading technologies. The Product Design department are continuously developing technologies to benefit the future of pool water disinfection.

ART (Adaptive Response Technology) is Gaffey’s latest innovation built-in to their iSEC® range of Hyprolyser® chlorination systems, including the new 250-2000 high-capacity skid systems, which can treat up to a whopping 4000 cubic metres of water. Along with unique precision blending technology and plug-and-play features, Hyprolyser® delivers the very best in product design.

Maxwell Cole heads up the Product Design team and we asked him about this latest development. With over 35 years working with electrochlorination systems, Max is well-known in the water disinfection industry.

Q: What inspired you to come up with ART?

Listening to our clients and service partners feedback and looking at areas we could improve.  Understanding the site conditions we cannot control for example: high ambient and elevated water temperatures, corrosive environments and fluctuating water pressures. The challenge comes from making an already reliable user-friendly system, then taking it to the next level in efficiency and robustness.  With the ART we can now adapt the output of the system to cope with the extremes of site conditions and at the same time keeping the quality of the final product. The ART system also allows us to increase the lifespan of the systems key components which greatly reduces maintenance requirements.

Q: Once you had the idea, where did you start?

We start by visualisation by building a 3D computer model in SolidWorks and consider all the aspects of the system from installation to operation and maintenance. We also consider what customers’ expectations are such as HMI touch-screen display giving greater system controllability, connectivity through Phone text email and VNC.  Improved operational efficiency benefits extended component lifespan. Improving the service experience with CIP and easy removal of parts for inspection or replacement.

We then build prototypes for factory testing then site testing. For instance, the first protype has been field tested for over 2 years whilst the whole development process takes between 3-5years to bring the final product to market.

Q: What processes do you go through to develop the idea?

First is to fully understand the market and applications, you really need to understand where and by who your product is going to be used. Then a good understanding of the regulations and standards as we need to ensure our systems are as universal as possible as this reduces variations to allow one set of approvals cover the range of products. Product standardisation also allows us improve manufacture, testing and delivery time.

Q: Did you have any challenges/setbacks or funny moments during development?

The challenges are bringing the product from prototypes (the easy bit) into manufacture so it can be fully tested and certified. This process involves all the factory build instructions and all the BOMs so that purchasing can work with suppliers so we can get the quality components we require.

Q: How do you feel now you see ART brought to life and in the market?

It’s always great to see a new product go live and to witness clients and distributors are happy with the product. It’s also great walking through production seeing our fantastic skilled workforce bring the systems to life. We have a long list of new exciting products to bring to the market so plenty great things to look forward to in the future.
